EAST HARTFORD -- Protector's of Animals officially opened their new low-cost, high-volume spay and neuter clinic on Saturday. They created the clinic to serve the local community's cats and dogs by providing low-cost option for spay and neuter surgeries.
Protectors of Animals hope they will reduce the population of unwanted litters of pets, and by so doing reducing the number of animals in local shelters, stray cats, and feral colonies.
"We work very hard to rescue unwanted pets and find them new homes, but it's an uphill battle," says Jody Macrina, the President of Protectors of Animals, "By helping to reduce the number of unwanted pets on the streets and in shelters, we can reduce the overall need to rescue the number of animals being needlessly euthanized."
The clinic, "POA Spay," will offer reduced costs for basic spay/neuter services, making the service available to pet owners who can't otherwise afford them. They also hope to help out local rescue groups and animal control officers who wanted to adopt animals with the surgeries already performed.
"We are able to keep our prices low, because we keep our overhead low," according to Pam Knoecklein, Clinic Director. She says that since they only over spay/neuter services along with basic vaccinations, they don't need the variety of equipment and supplies that family veterinarians need to provide full services.
The clinic staff will also educate clients on the need to maintain regular, necessary care with a full-service veterinarian.
