HARTFORD -- Saturday brought snow across Connecticut which made for a pretty picture but also caused multiple problems across the state.
According to State Police, as of 10 p.m. there were approximately 193 crashes and 198 mortorist assists which mailnly spin-outs and vehicles stuck in the snow.
A major accident involving 26 cars and 4 tractor trailers on I-91 on the Cromwell/Middletown line shut down I-91 for several hours.
State Police also said there were several accidents on I-95 southbound in the Milford area, along with a jack-knifed tractor trailer. Also on I-95 in Orange, there was another tractor trailer that went down an embankment. The right lanes were closed due to those incidents.
Governor Malloy issued a statement in regards to the messy weather. He said that 821 DOT plows were deployed throughout the state to clear the roads.
"Visibility and road conditions vary across regions and I strongly encourage everyone to stay safe and to use good judgement. Residents who live in areas most impacted by the storm are advised to remain off the roads, if possible. If travel is necessary, motorists are urged to exercise caution, to build in extra travel time, and to practice safe winter driving skills-such as slowing down, increasing following distance, driving in already traveled lanes, keeping headlights on, and avoiding distractions in your vehicle.
We also remind drivers that the state now has three tow plow trucks capable of clearing two travel lanes in a single pass. These trucks are based in the New Haven area, primarily in the I-95/Q Bridge corridor. Motorist?s are urged to stay clear of snowplows while on the road and are cautioned against trying to pass a snowplow when it is in operation."
