EAST HAVEN — Police are investigating who abandoned a dog in a crate near a dumpster on Tuesday.

A two or three-year-old male pitbull was found Tuesday morning in a bottomless cage near a dumpster on Coe Avenue, in East Haven. Temperatures at the time were below freezing.

Animal control officers said the dog was aggressive and children in the area were warned to go inside when the dog was being removed.

Officers said the dog did not have any collar or chip. They believe the dog has not been to a vet.

The person who abandoned the dog could face animal cruelty charges.

The dog is still with animal control, and had initially been well behaved but then became aggressive. Because animal Control is conducting a criminal investigation, the dog cannot be seen at this time.
