CROMWELL -- Police in Cromwell are looking to add a new K9 to their force, but first they need the public’s help.
The Cromwell Police Department’s former K9, Chino, retired in October after 7 years with the department. Since then, police have already missed having that public safety resource.
“Just a couple weeks ago, to do a search, we had to call in surrounding agencies. We were actually able to get a state trooper. I think he was coming from Bethany,” said Cromwell Police Chief Denise Lamontagne.
She said, “To be able to have an officer here in town that can respond within 15-20 minutes is a lot different than calling somebody and not getting a response for 45 minutes to an hour.”
Chief Lamontagne said the police department does not have room for a K9 in its budget, so they are hoping to raise funds through community efforts.
The K9 alone costs up to $8,000 and then there are equipment, training, and veterinary costs that follow.
“We’ve already started getting some checks. People are definitely appreciative of having the dog,” said Chief Lamontagne.
The department is also getting a big help from local restaurant Chicago Sam’s Bar and Grille, located on Shunpike Road.
On January 29, the restaurant will donate 25% of its proceeds during the hours of 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. to the K9 fund.
Those who can’t attend but would still like to help can donate directly to the Cromwell Police Department.
