WILLIMANTIC — Police said they have arrested a man impersonated who a police detective, tampered with evidence at a burglary and interviewed witnesses at another crime scene.

Police charged Danny Vazquez, 27, of Canterbury, was charged with impersonating a police officer and tampering with evidence. He was held on a total of $50,000 bond and appeared in court Friday.

According to police, Vazquez allegedly identified himself as a “Willimantic Police Detective” to a crime victim of a crime.

Police said he got the name of the victim – from an investigation police were conducting – and called them, pretending to be a detective with the department to get them to talk about the case.

In another incident, police said Vazquez allegedly tampered with evidence at a scene of a burglary.

Police said this was the second time in six months that Vazquez has been charged with impersonating an officer.

Police arrested Danny Vazquez on July 30, 2016. At that time, police say he went to a home and claimed he was an officer investigating a complaint about drug sales happening there.

They say he flashed a pair of handcuffs, was wearing a suit, and an earpiece and claimed he was an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms there to arrest someone at the home.

Police are asking anyone with information in the case to call investigators.
