NEW HAVEN -- A woman was killed Tuesday afternoon when she was struck by a car near Yale-New Haven Hospital. Emergency crews were called to the scene shortly after 3 p.m. at York Street and South Frontage Road in New Haven.

The victim, Melissa Tacredi, 42, of Waterbury, was standing on the sidewalk when the car hit her. Officer David Hartman said she was not trying to cross the road when she was hit. She died, despite the best efforts of passersby, many of whom are medical professionals and hospital staff, according to Hartman.

Hartman said the woman driving the car was heading east on South Frontage Road in a left turn only lane. As the car approached York Street, she continued traveling straight, instead of going left, and jumped the curb, hitting the victim.

The driver remained at the scene of the accident. Police say they will determine whether or not to file charges against the driver when they conclude their investigation.

A Yale University police officer said he was very upset by the accident because the university staffs this intersection with officers on foot every day to try to make it as safe as possible for pedestrians.
