HARTFORD --  This weekend, people across the world will turn off the lights to make a statement about protecting the earth. The World Wildlife Fund is asking people to turn up the dark!

On Saturday, March 25 at 8:30 p.m., big landmarks across the world will all go dark for an hour, in support of action on climate change.

Landmarks like the Empire State Building, the Sydney Opera House, and the Eiffel Tower will all turn off the lights for Earth Hour 2017.

Last year, over 7,000 cities across the world participated. This is all for the fact that our planet’s climate is changing at a faster rate due to human activity. The World Wildlife Fund wants to keep the momentum going after the historic Paris agreement on climate, which was signed back in 2015.

“Our actions today will define our tomorrow. Together, let’s change climate change,” said Marco Lambertini, Director General of WWF.

According to Yale researchers, the public is starting to catch on to the severity of climate change. They said 84 percent of Connecticut residents believe we should be investing in more renewable energy, compared to the national average of 82 percent.

There are some things you can do at home to help the cause, like recycling, turning off lights when you're not in the room or buying a hybrid or electric car. The past few years has brought of a surge of renewable innovations in "green technology" so the future is bright, or in the case of Earth Hour, it's dark.
