NEW HAVEN —  Officials have cleared the scene outside of a post office after reports of a suspicious package Wednesday afternoon.

New Haven officials said the scene outside of the post office on 50 Brewery Street is now clear after reports of a suspicious package. Officials said the suspicious package was a small battery connected to a paper box belonging to the Connecticut Post newspaper.

The device was part of the coin release mechanism to get the money out of the machine after papers are sold out.

Officials said they think the device was left attached to the paper box in error and it was reported to 911 because it looked like a bomb, consisting of C batteries connected by wires to the box.

The post office was evacuated and New Haven police, fire and bomb squad began their investigation.

The incident took place around 3:07 p.m. and was cleared at 5:05 p.m. Brewery Street is now open. No injuries were reported in this incident.
