MIDDLETOWN -- Nathan Carman, a person of interest in the 2013 murder of his grandfather and the disappearance of his mother last September, was in court with his attorney attempting a little damage control Thursday afternoon.

Carman's attorney contends it's information like this, since there has been no arrest, that could hurt his client's prospects for future employment.

And he argued that it is highly unusual for search warrants to be made public unless an arrest has already been made.

But, the judge denied his request saying the warrant has been public for nearly 3 years.

His attorney, Trent LaLima, asked Judge Elpedio N. Vitale to seal the 2014 search and seizure warrant, obtained by the Windsor Police Department, which is still investigating the murder of Nathan Carman's grandfather, a Windsor resident.

According to the search warrant, which has been public for nearly three years, Carman was the last person to see his grandfather, John Chaklos, alive on the night of Dec. 19, 2013.

And police say Carman's whereabouts, between 3 and 4 a.m. the morning of Dec. 20, 2013 are unknown. Police believe that was around the time that 87-year-old John Chakalos was shot to death.

The warrant also states that Nathan Carman discarded the hard drive to his computer and the GPS unit he used on the morning of Dec. 20, 2013, which is the morning Chakalos was discovered dead.

When searching Carmen's Middletown residence, July 16, 2014, police discovered a gun and ammunition, but neither matched the type used to murder Chakalos. However, the day after that search, Windsor police learned that Carman had purchased a .308 caliber rifle from a gun store New Hampshire. That is the same caliber weapon used to murder Chakalos.
The search warrant also stated that some family members made investigators aware that, as a child, Nathan Carman once held another child hostage with a knife.

Still, there are no arrests in the death of his grandfather or the case of his missing mother, who hasn't been seen since going boating with her son last September.

Middletown State's Attorney, Peter McShane, told the judge he found it interesting that LaLima's client was now concerned about his image being tarnished when, last fall, after his mother vanished, Carman was willing to do an interview with ABC News.

Neither LaLima nor McShane would comment following today's hearing.
