3 residents, 2 police officers, 1 firefighter taken to the hospital after Hartford apartment building fire

HARTFORD — Six people, including two police officers and a firefighter, were rushed to the hospital Sunday afternoon after a fire.

Flames broke out a three-story apartment building on 217 Wethersfield Avenue around 2 p.m. Three residents of the building and two police officers were treated. Police got to the scene quickly and one of the officers said he did not hear the fire alarm and saw several residents go back in the building. Officers Chris Heimerdinger and Miguel Maldonado proceeded to go through the building yelling for people to get out. They located one woman who had to be rescued by Hartford Fire personnel from the window. Heimerdinger and Maldonado were taken to Hartford Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

One resident told police the fire started in her apartment when she was using hairspray and a cigarette and the bed ignited according tho the incident report.

The Red Cross said they are helping 9 families with shelter.

One Hartford firefighter was brought to the hospital with a minor burn. No word was available on the conditions of the others taken to the hospital.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Check back for further details as they develop.
