WEST HARTFORD -- A local organization teamed up with a West Hartford salon to help those in need. United Artists Salon in West Hartford along with Journey Home in Hartford, hosted their 3rd Annual Haircuts for Humanity Monday.
The salon offered free haircuts with the hope of bringing a boost of confidence and self-esteem to those in need, and to raise awareness for homelessness. Also lending a helping hand -- a number of local businesses in West Hartford; Effie’s Place, Park & Oak Restaurant, Whole Foods Market, Hartford’s Max Downtown, Blue State Coffee and Scotts’ Jamaican Bakery all donated food and beverages.
"All proceeds go to Journey Home in Hartford as they continue to lead the effort in ending chronic homelessness in the Greater Hartford region," said Sara Salomons, Director of Development and Communications for Journey Home. "The suggested donation is $25 and you can contribute by check made out to Journey Home or by visiting our website."
According to Journey Home's website, their primary focus is attacking the issue of chronic homelessness by assisting with housing, employment, and support services, rather than managing it with emergency shelter.
"All these volunteers, we're doing something good for our community," said Kevin Irish, the owner of United Artists Salon.
"I appreciate all the stylists here and for them to give on their day off, it's wonderful," said Anthony DeCariac, who lives in a Hartford shelter, after getting shampooed and styled.
The Haircuts for Humanity event "allows people to give in small ways but when you give in a small way you're still making a great impact," Salomons said.
