NEW LONDON — The United States Coast Guard helps protect this country so we can keep our unalienable rights. Groups were exercising those rights as President Donald Trump visited New London to give the commencement speech at the Coast Guard Academy Wednesday.

Hundreds of supporters gathered outside the US Coast Guard Academy to welcome Trump. Sporting signs, including “Hillary for Prison,” a reference to Trump’s 2016 opponent Hillary Clinton, the Trump supporters were joined outside the academy by hundreds of protesters who sported signs urging Trump to step down.

Hundreds of both supporters and protesters came out to McKinley Park prior to Trumps’ arrival.

The Unite and Resist rally started at the Sailors and Soldiers monument in New London. That group was protesting the President’s plans and policies.

“The language that the president has been using is very defining and it’s putting everyone in boxes. And I think the point tomorrow is to say we will not be put in a box,” said Nancy Mello-Miller, a leader for Action Together Connecticut, the day before.

Lori Hopkins-Cavanagh led a group that was happy to welcome the President to New London.

“I would love to see this be the city of New London’s presidential welcoming party. a celebration. Whether it’d be a Republican or a Democrat. It doesn’t matter to me,” says Hopkins-Cavanagh.

Although both sides differ, they said they both respected each other’s freedom of speech and promised their convergence will be peaceful.
