TORRINGTON --  Police said they are investigating the death of a 15-month-old baby who was found unresponsive Tuesday morning.

Torrington police said the incident occurred at 420 South Main Street.

A friend of the baby's mother said she just saw the baby playing outside shortly before the incident.

"I was surprised. I was shocked. My husband had just seen the baby this morning on the porch and he was fine," said Nicole Rodriguez, friend of the mother.

Police said around 10:54 a.m., Litchfield County Dispatch received a 911 call from a female reporting her child was unresponsive and needed help.

"He's absolutely happy all the time. Smiling, talking. I mean, he was a joy," added Rodriguez.

Police say the mother was not home when the baby was found in the bath tub and someone else was caring for the baby. As for who that person is and what happened while the mother was gone, police said they cannot share those details yet.

"She's the best mom. Ever. She doesn't leave her kids at home, her house is spotless if you walk up to her house. Her kids have everything," said Erica Shaw, the baby's aunt.

Shaw said when the mother walked into her home and asked where her baby was, the person caring for the baby said this ....

"He said 'uhhhh,' just like that, she walked into the bathroom to find out her son was drowning," added Shaw.

The baby was transported to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital and was pronounced dead.

The people involved in this incident are not being identified yet. This case remains under investigation.
