Jeff Immelt stepping down as General Electric CEO

Jeff Immelt, who has led General Electric Co. since 2001, is stepping down, the company announced Monday.

The company named John Flannery, the president and CEO of GE Healthcare, as the new CEO, effective immediately.

Immelt will remain as chairman through the end of this year.

General Electric broke ground last month on its new headquarters at the former NECCO candy factory in Boston.
