TORRINGTON —  Police said the woman who was struck by a car Saturday has died.

Police said Nellie Crowston, of Torrington, died as a result of her injuries sustained in the motor vehicle crash.

Torrington police said the accident took place on Main Street near McDonald’s around 6 p.m., when Crowston was crossing an intersection and was struck by a car. The car was driven by Crystal St. Hilaire, 36, of Torrington.

Crowston suffered serious head injury, and was flown to Hartford Hospital via LifeStar. Police say that Crowston’s injuries were life-threatening.

Crowston was an active volunteer on the Torrington Democratic Town Committee. Danielle Palladino, chairwoman of the committee, said in a statement:

“The Torrington Democratic Town Committee is heartbroken over the tragic and sudden loss of member Nellie Crowston. Nellie was a dedicated volunteer on our committee, and worked diligently on countless campaigns and advocated for policies to better the lives of all Torrington residents. In addition to her activism, Nellie will also be remembered by generations of Torrington Public School students for her tenure as a teacher. Her passing leaves a tremendous void in our community and in our hearts. We will celebrate her life as a mother, grandmother, activist, educator, and friend to all those she met. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Torrington’s Accident Investigation Team is continuing to investigate the crash.
