HARTFORD -- Police are investigating after a 2-year-old girl found wandering the streets alone prompted an hours-long search for her mother Wednesday.

Police say the 2-year-old girl was picked up by a concerned neighbor after she was spotted wandering in the area of Shultas Place around 9 a.m.

After three hours of searching for the girl's parents, police received a call from her mother.

"The neighbors, thank God, saw her out here just kind of having fun but by herself, and they watched her for a few minutes and realized wait, this child’s alone," said Dep. Chief Brian Foley.

The mother, who is employed at one of the local hospitals, says she saw a Facebook live video of a wandering child in Hartford. She was surprised to learn that the child in the video was her own, and immediately called police.

The mother went on to say an older relative was supposed to babysit for the day, but that a miscommunication occurred and ultimately led to the child's escape.

"The aunt and someone in another apartment, another family member, had a miscommunication as to who was supposed to be watching the child. Based on those two apartments having the miscommunication, the child was able to get out and wander around here in the neighborhood" said Dep. Chief Brian Foley.

There aren't any indications this was a criminal incident, but there will be a DCF and Hartford police follow-up.
