NEW MILFORD — Police are investigating after an officer killed an armed man Monday afternoon.

Connecticut State Police detectives from Western District Major Crime are taking over the investigation at the request of the State's Attorney's Office and the New Milford Police Department.

The incident happened at 47 Outlook Road shortly before 5 p.m. for a disturbance.

Connecticut State Police Trooper First Class Kelly Grant said a man exited the home with a shotgun and ran into the woods. A New Milford officer set up a perimeter, and requested a police negotiator and a K-9 officer to assist with getting the man out of the woods.

Grant said the man came out of the woods on his own, and approached the officers with that weapon in hand, ignoring officers demands to drop the weapon. She said at least one officer fired at least one round at the male striking him. The officers immediately rendered first aid and the man was taken to Danbury Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police did not identify the man nor would they say if he lived at that address.

The name of the officer involved is also being withheld while the investigation is underway, according to police.
