Blumenthal calls for stronger safety measures regarding portable generators
At least nine carbon monoxide-related deaths have been reported due to Irma.
From 2004 to 2012, the Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 659 deaths due to portable generators. The Commission found that many of them occurred during power outages from hurricanes and other natural disasters.
Senator Blumenthal is now calling on the Portable Generator Manufacturers’ Association to require manufacturers to create technology to reduce carbon monoxide emissions, provide free CO alarms with battery backup, and include an at least 25-foot extension cord for portable generators so they can be used according to safety guidelines.
