NEW BRITAIN -- Connecticut State Police are investigating a deadly police-involved shooting in New Britain.

At about 6:43 p.m., police initiated a traffic stop near the corner of Chapman Street and Chapman Court. The vehicle in question was suspected to have been involved in a series of armed carjackings, over at least the last two weeks, in New Britain and surrounding towns.

New Britain police eventually opened fire into the suspect vehicle, Thursday, killing one person. Two other occupants were struck and injured by gunfire, however they are expected to survive.

According to police, no officers were injured in the incident but were taken to the hospital to be checked out.

New Britain Police Chief James Wardwell said the car involved was also involved in four carjackings in New Britain.

State Police Central District Major Crimes detectives were called to the scene shortly afterwards to investigate.

Police said there was at least one gun in the occupants possession.

As per standard protocol, the officers involved were put on leave pending the investigation.

Mayor Erin Stewart said there is not an immediate threat to the public. She said the streets will be shut down through the daylight because it is an active crime scene. You can expect Chapman Street to be closed from Newington Avenue down to Chapman Court.
