NEW BRITAIN — A Tuesday night fire in New Britain left one apartment building destroyed.

Officials said at around 10:20 p.m., they rushed to the scene of the fire at 42 Connerton Street, a 3-story, 6-unit building.

When crews arrived, they found an outpouring of smoke coming from the building and as they were fighting the fire, some firefighters became disoriented on the third floor of the building, and a mayday was called.  All crews exited the building safely, and the mayday was then cancelled.

The building was vacant, and nobody was displaced by the blaze.

The building itself sustained severe damage with interior structural collapse, as well as a total roof collapse.

The fire was under control by around 6 a.m. One firefighter was injured and taken to the hospital for observation, then released.

Southington and Bristol Fire Departments were called in to help the fire station cover for crews fighting the fire

The fire is under investigation by the New Britain Fire Marshal’s Office.
