SHELTON — Two prominent volunteer firefighters have been charged with arson in connection with a blaze outside of their firehouse in Shelton.
Police said surveillance video captured Gregory Bomba, 45, a former fire captain from Newtown, and William Tortora, 57, the brother of a fire marshal, setting boxes on fire in the bed of a pickup truck outside the Echo Hose Company #1 firehouse, located at 379 Coram Avenue in Shelton, on Saturday, February 3.
It happened during a dinner for a former captain at the fire station. As the flames began to grow, police said Tortora got into the truck and drove away until the burning boxes flew off.
Tortora was arrested Friday, and Bomba turned himself in to police Monday.
Both men are facing charges of arson, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. Bomba was held on a $250,000 bail.
Fire officials have declined comment.
