ENFIELD -- The on and off ramps at the Enfield exit on Interstate 91 remained closed on Wednesday as crews worked to clean up thousands of gallons of gas. A tractor-trailer truck crashed in the area causing the spill on Monday.

Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection  Supervisor Jeff Chandler said crews are working to not only clean up the spill but also do some testing to make sure they do not run into contamination risks in the future.  As of Wednesday, three homes with wells in the area were advised not to drink their water for the time being.

“Not because there is contamination there but because when you use a well that well water will draw the contaminants from the area where it is impacted towards the well and  we want to limit that potential for the migration of the fuel,” Chandler said.

Enfield resident Kelly Davis lives right next door to the three homes under the advisory. While experts do not believe her well is at risk she said the proximity still makes her a little nervous.

“The first thing we thought of was our water and you know you just don’t know what’s going to happen, you know it’s our drinking water,” Davis said.

Chandler said the company responsible for the spill will have to set up a rigorous testing program to make sure they do not run into any contamination problems in the future.

State Police are investigating into what caused a tractor-trailer carrying gas to crash, spilling the gas.

Police say the Massachusetts truck was traveling on the I-91 southbound exit ramp 49 in Enfield. The truck rolled over during the turn, before coming to a halt on the right shoulder of the road. The driver, Jonathan Edwards from Massachusetts, sustained only minor injuries, and was taken to Saint Francis hospital for treatment.
