Elementary school in Southington

SOUTHINGTON —  A case of measles have been confirmed at Derynoski Elementary School, according to Southington Public Schools.

Southington Public Schools said parents should consult with their child’s physician for additional information regarding their specific set of circumstances.

“Staff members will be receiving a separate communication regarding documentation of vaccination or of having contracted measles in the past,” said Southington Public Schools.

According to DPH personnel, students attending the YMCA before school program are not likely to be at risk for exposure.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people who have had measles in the past or who have been vaccinated against measles are considered immune.

Symptoms usually appear in 10–14 days after exposure, although they may occur as early as 7 or as late as 21 days after exposure. A typical case of measles begins with mild to moderate fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes (conjunctivitis), and sore throat.
