MIDDLETOWN -- Fire crews were called to the scene at Rapallo Avenue and deKoven Drive in Middletown after reports of a fire.

Officials say they got a call around 10:45 p.m., around the corner from the fire station. By the time crews arrived, they saw a heavy fire in the back of the building.

The fire extended from porch to porch, and eventually caught hold of the roof. Officials say the multiple layers of the roof made it hard to fight. Once they thought the fire was out in one spot, they'd find it again at a different section of the roof.

All occupants were able to escape with their pets unharmed. There were no reports of any missing animals after the fires. The Middletown Health Department and the American Red Cross is helping everyone who was displaced.

Middletown Fire Chief Robert Kronenberger said they don't know what caused the fire at this time, but they are currently investigating.
