TORRINGTON — Police said they are investigating comments made by a Torrington Middle School student.

Torrington Police Department officials said the student has been identified and that school administrators are taking steps to address safety concerns.

“The Torrington Police Department thoroughly investigates any comments made toward any students or the school that may cause any safety concerns,” police said. “Though there is no current threat to the school or students, there will be additional police presence at the middle school for the next few days.”

The child allegedly made the inappropriate comments during class and was overheard by other students, who voiced their concerns to faculty members.

No arrests have been made.

Police Lieutenant Bart Barown also cautioned parents to avoid taking social media rumors at face value.

“Social media has incorrect information that has created issues and impacted this investigation,” said Barown. “Detectives are currently working on this and working to resolve it in a timely manner.”

Detectives are still investigating the validity of the comments and have not yet determined the student’s intentions.
