Firefighters respond to house fire in Vernon

A smoke detector awakened woman in home; the assistant fire chief says flames were shooting out about 15 feet into the air when he arrived.

VERNON – One woman is safe after a working smoke detector alerted her to a fire in her home early Friday morning.

Officials say she was the only person home at the time, and thankfully, was not injured.

Fire crews were called to a home on Willow Stream Drive in Vernon around 3:30 a.m.

The Vernon Fire Department was able to knock down the fire within twenty minutes. The assistant fire chief says the flames were shooting out from the roof about 15 feet into the air when he arrived.

Mutual aid from surrounding towns helped cover calls while the Vernon Fire Department worked to extinguish the flames.

Officials say there is heavy smoke damage to the bedrooms, the building official will determine the extent of remaining damage.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the building official and fire marshal.
