NEW HAVEN --  One man is dead following an afternoon shooting in New Haven.

New Haven police said a 23-year-old victim suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was rushed to Yale New Haven Hospital where he was pronounced dead around 1 p.m.

The shooting occurred at 128 Henry Street.

One person in the neighborhood said crime in the area is getting worse.

“Its like, a war zone. Especially for kids. I wouldn’t raise no kids around here.”

Leonard said this is only one of several violent crimes to happen in the neighborhood in recent months, including another shooting at the same house a few months ago.

“I heard somebody got shot in the leg,” Leonard said.

Kwame Kyei said he knew the victim who was fatally shot Saturday.

"Yeah those people living there they're nice people,” said Kyei.

And unlike Leonard, Kyei doesn’t think the neighborhood has a crime problem.

“I can walk back-and-forth 24/7. Yeah so I was surprised to see or hear that someone was killed.”
