GRISWOLD — The two Democratic candidates are taking sides in a local battle over where to locate a proposed Connecticut State Police firing range.

Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont, the party’s endorsed candidate, opposes the state’s plans to locate the range in Griswold near Pachaug State Forest. He appeared Tuesday with local activists fighting the long-awaited project.

Lamont says he supports a new range, but believes the Griswold site is the “wrong place.”

Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim is siding with the family selling the land for the range, which would replace an aging state training facility in Simsbury that’s prone to flooding. He’s calling them “hard-working Democrats” who “stepped up and agreed to sell the land.”

Ganim also says Lamont’s “ignorant foray into a local matter like this” will further delay the facility.
