Burlington man arrested in connection with 2004 New Britain homicide

NEW BRITAIN -- New Britain Police Department they've arrested 42-year-old Sorek Minery of Burlington in connection with the 2004 homicide of Paul Sweetman.

This comes one day after Rudy Hannon, 72, was extradited from Indian Springs, Nevada back to New Britain, also in connection with the homicide.

Hannon was serving time in a Nevada prison. He was charged with murder and felony murder in the death Sweetman, 84, of Southington.

Hannan is described as leading Sweetman to Minery, who then beat Sweetman before dismembering his body and spreading the body parts around New Britain.

Hannan ‘s attorney asked the judge to reduce his his clients bond for medical reasons.

“Because he suffering from some health issues,” Patten Brown said. “He had recent bypass surgery. He’s undergoing some cancer treatment and they took some of his medication when he arrived here."

In the affidavit Minery said Hannan convinced him Sweetman needed to be killed because Sweetman was hurting his own wife, Joanne Sweetman and that, “God would have wanted them to kill Sweetman,” according to court documents.

Minery lives in Burlington. Court documents reveal he is a carpenter with a business listed as Blue Ridge Woodworks.

Neighbors said he lives with his wife and three children.

State police, Southington Police, and the FBI all assisted with the investigation, along with the Connecticut Forensic Science Lab and the States Attorney's Office.

Minery is held on a $5,000,000 bond and is due to appear in Bristol Superior Court today.
