NEW HAVEN - Residents in one New Haven neighborhood are calling for a traffic light and speed bumps to be installed on a portion of Howard Avenue where two children were hit by a car Monday morning.
Residents living near the intersection of Howard Ave. and First St. say kids from a nearby daycare cross this intersection every day without incident, until Monday.
Police said the woman who hit two children with her Subaru wagon was issued an infraction for failure to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk. No criminal charges were filed, for now, s long as the children recover fine, there will be no additional charges.
Just after 11:30 Monday morning, from Hope Academy daycare were returning to their school from a playground splash pad when their day took a terrifying turn.
"Kids were crossing the street, with the teachers assistant in tow, who was trying to block traffic," said Deputy Fire Chief James Watkins, of the New Haven Fire Department.
But, a woman, driving a Subaru wagon, did not see the group of kids in time to stop. Things could have been even worse for this group of children, who mostly ranged in age from 3 to 5.
"Unfortunately, two of the students, from Hope Academy, got run over by a vehicle," said Watkins.
One of the children hit was Jameson Jones, a two-year-old boy, whose family shared some photos of him in the emergency room with Fox 61. They are asking for everyone’s prayers. They say Jameson is an only child.
"Their condition, right now, the update that we got, stable condition and one has a little bit more injuries than the other," said Watkins.
A person, who works for a business near the accident scene, told Fox 61, on the condition of anonymity, that the surveillance video shows that several other children narrowly escaped being hit, as well.
For Chief Watkins, this story hits close to home. His son attends Hope Academy, which he calls a "very good school."
And, Watkins adds, the says the adults supervision of the children is very good.
