DERBY — A California man has pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges in Connecticut.

The Department of Justice says 27-year-old Omar Villarreal entered his plea in Hartford Thursday in connection with a traffic stop in Derby.

Court records show the driver of a tractor trailer was stopped in Derby in December 2016, and police found a package with 55 pounds (25 kilograms) of the synthetic opioid fentanyl inside.

Police say the man had arranged to meet Villarreal in Waterbury, where he had a home where the shipment could be delivered.

The truck driver pleaded guilty to related charges in April 2017. He has yet to be sentenced.

Villarreal faces up to 20 years in prison during his sentencing scheduled for Nov. 28.
