Person taken to hospital following pepper spray incident at Litchfield campground

LITCHFIELD – One person was taken to the local hospital Sunday following a pepper spray incident at a Litchfield campground.

Multiple first responders were called to the Cozy Hill Campground on Bantam Road for what appeared to be a large-scale Haz-Mat incident.

Dispatchers said multiple people became sick at while at an open-air pavilion in the campground, reporting vomiting and a burning in the eyes and nose.

Campground owner Lelah Campo said they believe that it was a sort of accident. Most of their campers carry a type of pepper or bear spray and they believe a child was trying to show off the spray.

Regardless of the origin, Campo said people who were playing bingo nearby began to be affected from it. An off duty cop at bingo said that it was pepper spray and police later confirmed it.

EMS went around asking campers if they needed treatment, and six people requested it, one of them was a 10 year old girl who was being babysat. Because her legal guardians were not around, EMS had to take her. She could not refuse service.

About 300 people were at the camp ground this weekend. Campo said everyone’s symptoms went away.

State police was investigating the source of the spray.

Cozy Hills is a commercial campground for tent camping, and RV’s and smaller campers.
