HARTFORD, Conn.  — The girlfriend of a Connecticut man heading to trial this week in a 2016 double homicide has pleaded guilty to her role in trying to protect her boyfriend.

The Hartford Courant reports that 22-year-old Kailei Opalacz, of Glastonbury, pleaded guilty Monday to first-degree hindering prosecution for her role in helping Joseph Silva get away after the double shooting in Hartford two years ago.

She was not sentenced.

Prosecutors say on May 16, 2016 Silva fatally shot 22-year-old Joshua Cortez and 23-year-old Alysha Ocasio. He and Cortez had an ongoing dispute.

Authorities say when Silva’s getaway vehicle broke down, Opalacz called for another vehicle, then suggested Silva change his clothes.

Silva’s trial is scheduled to start Wednesday. He told investigators that the gun went off when he and Cortez struggled.
