THOMASTON — A woman was killed after her car careened down an embankment and slammed into a tree in Thomaston.
Connecticut State Police said a serious accident closed Route 8 Southbound in Thomaston for several hours this morning. Troop L initially responded to the call and reported serious injuries after discovering the vehicle and driver over the northbound side of the highway after 8 a.m. Saturday.
Once crews arrived, they closed the highway on the southbound side as well for several hours.
An investigation revealed that 28-year-old Cassandra Bigos of Bethany was driving north of exit 40 in Thomaston when she suddenly lost control of her vehicle for unknown reasons.
Her car exited the traveled section of highway from the left shoulder and crashed through a metal post and wired rope guardrail. It continued rolling down the embankment before colliding with a tree and exploding into flames.
Fire crews extinguished the fire and quickly extricated the operator from the vehicle. They rushed her to the emergency room at nearby Waterbury Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead from her serious injuries.
There were no other vehicles or injuries reported.
Traffic was detoured off the highway for several hours. Troop L eventually reopened the highway around 12:30 p.m.
Investigators are reconstructing the accident in hopes of determining what caused the driver to suddenly lose control of the vehicle.
