HARTFORD  — Connecticut has launched a new “tap and go” fare card to make riding the state’s public buses more convenient.

The new Go CT Card system allows riders to place funds into an account that’s connected to the card. The rider can then tap the card on a fare box each time they board a bus.

Riders who use the card will automatically receive available discounts.

Democratic Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says the card will make bus travel throughout Connecticut “significantly easier.” He’s says there’s been public demand for it.

Customers can receive the card for free for a limited time. After Dec. 31, it will cost $2. Transit riders can obtain it by visiting http://www.goctcard.com .

State officials hope to make the card available for use on rail lines.
