WINDSOR LOCKS -- The power is back on at Bradley International Airport but an investigation is underway following an early morning outage.

The airport’s primary power source is its own cogeneration facility. Not only did that fail this morning, but also its primary backup, which is a direct feed from Eversource. A spokesperson for Eversource did not immediately respond to comment. The airport’s third
generator was working but is only used to power life safety systems, such as fire alarms. As a result of the outage, many travelers experienced delays and cancellations.

“I’m flying to Montego Bay, Jamaica and I am here, still,” said Sonya Green. “I’m stuck here.”

While travelers still have many questions about the outage, they also have some answers now. In a statement, a spokesperson for Bradley International Airport says:

“At this time, we are fully processing passengers. However, we are advising passengers to please continue checking with their respective airline about any specific flights later in the day. We also continue fully to evaluate each component of our power systems. We apologize for the inconvenience, and we thank our passengers for their patience and understanding.”

Travelers endured cold temperatures in the early hours of the morning when they arrived to a darkened airport.

“They lined us up right out front,” said Danielle Wagner of Orange, Mass. “We were surrounded by cars and firetrucks when we appeared and it was still pitch black. Nobody ever came out to tell us what was happening or anything.”

Wagner was on her way to Disney World Monday morning and ended up getting bumped to an evening flight.

“Very rarely get time away. I work 16 hours a day 7 days a week and I was really looking forward to this trip,” she said, adding that she lost $500 in travel expenses because of the delay.

According to a spokesperson, an investigation remains active.
