HARTFORD — Connecticut State Police have identified a man who was shot and critically wounded by a city officer and accused him of holding a woman hostage at knifepoint during a domestic dispute.

Authorities on Saturday said 39-year-old Dennis Lawrence, of Hartford, was charged at St. Francis Hospital with assault, unlawful restraint, threatening and other crimes. He is being hel on a $150,000 bond, and is due in court on Monday.

State Police arrested Lawrence; they have taken over the investigation from Hartford Police because it involves an officer's use of deadly force.

Hartford police say they responded to a Garden Street apartment Friday morning on reports of an agitated man with a knife. Authorities say two officers entered the apartment, were confronted by Lawrence and ordered him to drop a knife before one of the officers opened fire.

The officers were identified as 15-year department veteran Chris White, who shot the man, and 10-year veteran Michael Bodner, who did not fire his gun. They were not physically injured.
