“All Clear” given for Western Connecticut State University after lockdown

DANBURY -- An "All clear" has been given after a shelter in place order was sent to people  on the campus of Western Connecticut State University Tuesday afternoon.

The school said, "The end of the shelter in place has been announced. Police will continue to investigate but the campus has been declared safe. Traffic around the campus is already busy so drivers are asked to be patient."

A campus wide alert issued by the school said, "Report of person with a gun in the VPA building. Shelter in place if you are on the Westside campus." The VPA is the Visual & Performing Arts Building. Classes were ongoing in the VPA building when the report was made.

Officials said a student saw a person with a long gun near the arts center and reported it to authorities.

Paul Steinmetz, Director of University Relations, said Connecticut State Police, Danbury Police and SWAT Team and West Conn Police are on the scene. The call came in just before 2 p.m.

Lake Ave extension on the campus is closed.

Steinmetz says the school had a similar report of an armed person in May that turned out to be someone carrying a microphone stand.
