For the past four years, the Derby Volunteer Fire Department has been helping those in need during the holidays.

This year was no exception! The firefighters cooked 85 pounds of turkey along with all of the fixings, and then delivered the Thanksgiving day meals to 70 seniors in the community.

”It’s a completely different atmosphere because usually we’re going to people in times of need,” said Captain Tom Biggs. “Now, they’re in need, but we’re bringing them something good for once! It’s good to be a change from coming in for a fire, or some sort of emergency, now we are giving them some food to eat... good food to eat!”

Members of the Derby Volunteer Fire Department donate all of the food to make this possible.

Training Education and Manpower, also know as TEAM, a non-profit organization based in Derby, helps select the recipients for the meals. TEAM works with Meals on Wheels, senior programs, and other social service groups.

“They are smiling, some of them are even crying, saying thank you so much for what you do, we really appreciate it,” said firefighter Linda Goodman.
