EAST LYME -- The death of a stabbing victim, in an East Lyme motel Monday night, is the first homicide investigation for that community in 24 years.

Police announced late Tuesday afternoon they have arrested a man, who was the victim's boyfriend, according to friends.

At 10:30 Monday night, the East Lyme police were called to a second floor room at the Starlight Inn, on Flanders Road, in Niantic, near I-95. There they found 25-year-old Corina Rodriguez, who had been stabbed multiple times. She died a short time later at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital in New London.

According to friends, Rodriguez lived at the hotel for over a month, with her boyfriend, Avery Hallbrooks, 28, who was charged with murder Tuesday afternoon.

"I know that they had been, you know, arguing, but about what I don't know," said Krysta Morant, who lives at Starlight Inn.

"I met them both about 5 years ago when I was living in the shelter on Jay Street (New London)," said Ashley Serrano, another resident of the Starlight Inn, who says Rodriguez has been a babysitter for her children.

A source said Rodriguez threw her boyfriend's clothes out on the walkway outside their room sometime Monday and locked him out. The source added that Hallbrooks came back to the room Monday night and banged on the door, while asking for forgiveness. That's when Rodriguez let him back into the room.

It was Hallbrooks, who made the 911 call, according to the source. He is being held on $1 million bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in New London.
