NEW HAVEN --Thursday morning, New Haven firefighters and police surrounded Wexler- Grant School after a fire broke out

“We received a call for an activated alarm at around,” says Thayer Baldwin, the Battalion Chief of the New Haven Fire Department

Fire officials say the fire started in the room and took less than 30 minutes to put out. We’re told the smoke and caused the school to evacuate.

“They moved to an area of refuge at the Yale until we were able to ventilate the building,” says Battalion Chief Baldwin.

The school had nurses check on the children, luckily no one was injured. Firefighters cleared the school -and students were brought back inside and dismissed early.

FOX 61 caught up with one woman who rushed to pick up her grandson. She says there was a big police presence outside of her grandson’s school so she went to check it out.

“I called my daughter and she lives a little further away and I was close I said I got this let me go to school and see what it going on,” says Queen Freelove, who lives in New Haven and has a grandson that goes to the school.

The school has a lot of clean up to do, but they plan on reopening by Friday.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
