MONTVILLE — The union representing Connecticut prison guards is raising questions about safety following an assault on two correction officers.

Officials say the inmate sent two guards to the hospital with serious injuries on Saturday evening at a high-security prison in Montville.

The New Haven Register reports that the guards have since been released from the hospital.

AFSCME Local 1565 officials say the inmate threatened to “maim and kill” prison staff before the assault.

Union President Michael Tuthill says he wants to know why the inmate hadn’t been placed in administrative segregation after making threats.

Correction Department spokeswoman Karen Martucci says the department has not seen the union’s press release and could not comment immediately.
