WATERBURY — The departure of an imam who led a Connecticut mosque for a decade has sparked protests by worshippers.

The Republican-American reports demonstrators have gathered outside Masjid Al-Mustafa in Waterbury on most evenings for the last two weeks.

The protesters say the imam, Ashraf Ibrahim, was pressured into resigning by the mosque’s board of trustees. Ibrahim resigned on Nov. 30.

One demonstrator said the protests began in earnest last month when more than a dozen members of the mosque received letters barring them from the property and threatening trespassing charges.

The mosque’s board said in a written statement that it has rules and regulations that need to be followed by everyone.
