Luis Ortiz

HARTFORD  — A Massachusetts man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for sexually assaulting a woman jogging on a Connecticut recreational trail.

The Hartford Courant reports that 32-year-old Luis Ortiz was also sentenced Monday to 10 years of special parole and is required to register as a sex offender.

Ortiz was scheduled for trial when he agreed to plead guilty to first-degree sexual assault. He would have faced significantly more time in prison if he was convicted by a jury.

The Chicopee, Massachusetts man, a driver for a portable toilet company, attacked the woman on the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail in Avon in June 2015.

Ortiz’s DNA was found on the woman.

Prosecutors say the victim was ready to testify, but was relieved that she did not have to.
