The South West’s First Solar Farm Is Connected

NEW MILFORD — The town of New Milford is moving to block a solar project on Candlewood Mountain that it says will have adverse effects for the environment.

Town officials have filed a petition asking the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection to subject the proposal to a stricter permitting process.

The town says the 163-acre energy plan would involve destruction of some 54 acres of core forestland and have adverse effects for stormwater runoff.

The project including 60,000 solar panels was approved in December 2017 by the Connecticut Siting Council. It would be owned and operated by Ameresco, a company based in Massachusetts.

DEEP officials said they were reviewing the petition.
