WALLINGFORD -- A fire at a home on Cedar Street had crews battling flames and the bitter cold Monday evening.

Just after 5:00 p.m. firefighters were called to 131 Cedar Street, where flames were shooting from the roof.

Neighbors told FOX 61 that the couple that live at the home were able to get out safely, along with their pets.

Some firefighters were seen slipping on ice while working to put out the fire.

Wallingford Deputy Fire Chief Steve Alsup discussed with FOX61 about some of the difficult conditions.

“First and foremost it’s freezing here, the guys are working their tails off, and they did such a fantastic job in the cold and the ice everything is freezing up on Contacts, in the wind, the heavy winds are just pushing the fire up into the cockloft made it really difficult to get a stop on this one.”

Aslup added,"So the guys encountered a house fire that had heavy smoke showing on arrival. They got inside fires up in the cockloft. It was hard to get to with the cold weather in the wind pushing it made this fire really challenging.”
