Farmington man dies after car goes off Route 9 in Berlin, DOT worker struck while responding to crash

BERLIN — A Farmington man has died after his car went off Route 9 northbound in Berlin and crashed into a pond.

State Police identified the driver as Anthony Autorino of Farmington. Police said Autorino’s 2006 Hummer H3 left the highway Friday afternoon, went over the wire rope barrier, down the embankment, and landed upside down in a body of water. He was the only person in the vehicle.

Autorino was pronounced dead at Hartford Hospital.

The vehicle did not make contact with any other vehicle, according to State Police.

State Police told FOX 61 that a state DOT worker was also hit by a car while working at the scene of the crash.

The worker’s injuries are minor according to the Department of Transportation.

Emergency crews used the exit 23 on-ramp to get a crane onto the highway. A dive team was also called in.

The highway was closed for several hours as crews worked to remove that vehicle. Route 9 north has since reopened.
