Bonner St Incident

HARTFORD — A Hartford woman is lucky to be alive after getting shot in the head while just sitting inside her apartment. She was wounded, but is expect to survive.

Things could have been a lot different. Just five homes separated where the gun was discharged from a childcare center.

The single gunshot shattered the afternoon silence in Hartford’s South End. “It’s scary. Very very scary,” said a neighbor. It happened at 166 Bonner Street. A three floor multi-family home. “In this situation right here. Yeah you are in trouble. Whoever you are you are in trouble,” remarked Lewis Camby of Southeastern, Connecticut.

It was a bizarre situation that police say, was all an accident. “We’re still working on identifying that person. It appears at this time that it was an accident,” said Hartford Police Lt. Aaron Boisvert.

Whoever was handling the gun, didn’t stick around to chat with police. Police still haven’t recovered the weapon.

They made sure the neighborhood was safe first. They evacuated homes and put the nearby McDonough School into lockdown. “It takes a lot of manpower. We had to call officers from the North End of the city to come and assist with that and basically it’s going to door to door escorting them out. CT Transit, they helped out as well bringing in a bus so we could store people in the warm bus,” said Lt. Boisvert.

The gun went off in the second floor apartment. “Being in a multi-family house. I think you would probably want to practice a better way to handle your weapon,” said Lewis Camby. The bullet went through the floor and struck a woman who was sitting in her 1st floor apartment in the head. “It’s not common, but it’s happened,” said Lt. Boisvert.

Police say between the three apartments, at least a dozen people were inside the multi-family home when the gun went off. Oddly enough, this city’s gunshot detection system Shotspotter did not alert them. They say everyone inside the home is cooperating in the investigation.
