HARTFORD — Hartford police have started a pilot program that will have 40 officers using body cameras for 30 days.

The city, which purchased 325 body-worn cameras last year, rolled out the cameras on Monday, with plans to expand the program department-wide.

Officials are instructing officers to turn on the camera at the start of any interaction with the public. The cameras include a feature that will allow it to retain video starting a minute before the start button is pressed.

Police Chief David Rosado says the department will follow policies for using the cameras that were established by the Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council.

He says officers, by in large, want the cameras and believe they will help counteract any false claims made against them.
