I-84 Eastbound reopens in East Hartford after fiery crash

EAST HARTFORD — A vehicle erupted into flames following a three-car crash on I-84 in East Hartford Thursday evening.

Troopers from Connecticut State Police-Troop H and local East Hartford fire crews were alerted to the collision and resulting blaze at approximately 5:45 p.m.

The eastbound side of the highway was closed between exits 56 and 58, just beyond the Bulkeley Bridge and the RT. 2 interchange.

State Police say the crash was just a minor “fender-bender,” though it was enough to ignite one of the vehicles and send flames and smoke roaring into the air.

Fortunately, there were no injuries. Everyone managed to escape their vehicles and move to a safe distance while firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Although the highway was fully reopened one hour later, traffic remained heavy due to the incident occurring during the busy evening commute.
